Johnson City MTPO Regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture and Deployment Plan
The Regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture provides a long-range plan for the deployment, integration, and operation of ITS in the Johnson City Region. The Regional ITS Architecture allows stakeholders to plan how they would like their system to operate in the future and then break
the system into smaller projects that can be implemented over time as funding permits. Development of a Regional ITS Architecture encourages interoperability and resource sharing among agencies and allows for cohesive long-range planning among regional stakeholders. Completion and update of the plan is also required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in order to use federal transportation funds for ITS projects in the Region. This handout provided by Kimley-Horn describes an overview of ITS and its many functions in the transportation system. The Johnson City MTPO, in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and Kimley-Horn, first developed the Regional ITS Architecture Plan in 2006. The Plan was updated in 2015 and 2022.
