Metropolitan Transportation Plan 2050 Update

The Johnson City MTPO’s Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is a federally-required document produced by the MTPO every five years that identifies projects to improve the region’s roadways, bridges, walkways, bikeways, and transit services. This plan will update the previous long-range transportation plan adopted in 2018 and address transportation opportunities and challenges in the region through the year 2050.

What’s next?

  • Draft Recommendations – A second public meeting will be held in May 2022 to share draft recommendations.
  • Final Report and Executive Summary – The third and final public meeting will be held in January 2023 for the public to review and comment on the draft plan. The final report and executive summary will be available online in February 2023.

  • Public Meeting No. 2 -


The Johnson City Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) is seeking public input to help establish transportation priorities for the cities and towns of Bluff City, Johnson City, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, Unicoi, and Watauga and portions of Washington, Carter, and Sullivan counties. Two open house style public meetings to gather important input from area residents are scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at the following locations and times. The public is invited to drop in anytime at their convenience.

Citizens interested in sharing their input on needed roadway improvements as well as other transportation investments such as sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways and public transportation are encouraged to attend the meeting. Additionally, please visit our website located at to find additional information on the project and to share your input by providing comments on our interactive map, which will go live by the day of the meetings.
