The Johnson City Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) leads regional transportation planning and funding decisions for the Johnson City Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA). If you would like to learn more about the different areas that are included within the MPA, check out this map.
The Johnson City MTPO is required by federal law to update the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) every five years. Our planning document outlines transportation and transit investments for the region over the next 25 years. Our plan will identify key needs and establishes goals, objectives, and performance measures to guide future investments in highways, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities.
To view the most recent version of the MTP, adopted on December 13, 2022, go to our MTP page.
The Johnson City MTPO is currently updating the MTP and the new plan is called “Safe Mobility 2050: The Johnson City Metropolitan Transportation and Safety Plan.” This plan will include a focus on safety for our transportation network. The planning process will take about two years, ending with the new plan being adopted before December 13, 2027.
